Here are some ideas for helping your students with their English:
- Have your child read to you in English and explain the book to you in Chinese.
- Questions: What is happening in the book or in the chapter? (This helps them talk about problem & characters)
- How did (event in the story) affect (character?). This helps them with cause and effect.
- Ask your child to explain a diagram or define a word.
- Decide on three to five questions your child should ask the teacher the next day. Write down the questions and ask the students to write down the answers so you can talk about them.
- Google these websites to help your students write in English and do research.
- Kids Wikipedia: This page is a good place to do research. You can find important information about many people and things in the world. Students can use it when doing homework.
- Google Translator: If you don't know the right word in English, you can type it here and translate it.
- And Don’t forget there is the parents ESL class on Saturday mornings. Talk to Mary Chu to get more details.
